Vintage Gold Opal Bug Brooch


A gorgeous mid twentieth century insect brooch. Two large opals form the body of the brooch and the piece is finished with two red gemstone eyes. The insects legs have cross hatching detail and fine prong work holding the opals in place. The opals are natural examples and have blue undertones with a bright play of colour.

Age: Circa 1950

Weight: 6.1 grams

Materials: 9ct gold. Tested via xrf analysis. Worn stamp on the reverse of the piece. 

Size: 4cm length

Gemstones: Natural Opals. Garnet believed to be the gemstone used in the eyes (untested due to smaller size). Large opal 2.2 x 1.4cm, smaller opal is 1cm diameter. 

Condition: Nice clean condition. No damage to the surface of the opals. Natural internal inclusions. The pin is secure and intact. Small area of facet wear to one garnet.
