Reserved - Georgian Chalcedony Intaglio Swivel Seal Necklace


A beautiful Georgian swivel seal on a later 18ct gold chain necklace. 

Circa: 1790-1800

Tests as: 18ct chain, 15ct gold frame and the intaglio mount tests as 18ct gold. 18ct chain clasp tests as base metal. 

The intaglio is double sided and can be twisted by lifting the stopper in the frame and turning the intaglio around. 

The intaglio is made from chalcedony and is finely engraved on each side. One side is engraved with a crest complete with the motto: 

“Haec olim meminisse iuvabit”

Meaning: “one day, this will be pleasing to remember” But commonly rendered in English as "One day, we'll look back on this and smile". From Virgil's Aeneid 1.203. Also, motto of the Jefferson Society. (Source Latin-is-simple.com)

The other side features initials (ML?) beneath a Lion.

Fob is 5cm in length and 3.2cm in width.

Chain is 42cm in length.

Nice clean condition. The stopping mechanism is secure and in great working condition. The intaglio has some small nibbles to the edges and around the carvings but no large chips or damage.
