Victorian Scottish M. Rettie & Sons Granite Enamel Gold Mourning Brooch
A stunning and rare 18ct gold brooch by M. Rettie and Sons.
The front of the brooch is inlaid with granite and the central plaque consists of a blue enamel background with a monogram which is believed to read "MAM".
The reverse contains a locket panel which contains plaited hair. The back is engraved with "Durris 1871" and the makers mark for M. Rettie and Sons Aberdeen.
M. Rettie and Sons were amongst the finest and most sought after Scottish jewellers of the 19th century.
Excellent condition. Small surface reaching split in the granite in the top panel - likely a natural split which is extremely hard to notice due to the mottled nature of the granite..
