Antique French Gold and Platinum Fob / Seal with Cherubs

A beautiful double sided antique French fob. Each side of this piece features two cherubs surrounding a cipher. The cipher is two interlocking L’s similar to the emblem on Sevres porcelain and Louis XIV . Unusually the base of this fob is made out of platinum which helps date the piece to the end of the 19th century. French jewellers began incorporating platinum into jewellery and refined the manufacturing process of platinum from 1870 onwards. It’s also possible the platinum base is a later addition to an earlier piece.

Age: Circa 1890-1920

Weight: 15.7 grams

Materials: 18ct Gold and Platinum. Tested via xrf. French assay marks for 18ct base of the fob tests as platinum.

Size: 3cm tall excluding the bail. The base of the seal is 18 x 14mm.

Gemstones: N/A

Condition: Nice clean condition. Age-related patina and surface marks. This can be seen around the bail and could be polished off but I have left the piece in it’s current condition. There is some scuffing to the edges and underside of the platinum base. The panels are not symmetrical and therefore the opposite side can be seen behind each other. It’s possible this was a luxury place card holder for a dining table that was adapted into a fob by a jeweller.
